Most people are familiar with small cylinder music boxes.  These are the snow globes and figurines that you wind up and play a tune.  Both of my daughters have several of this variety.  They are beautiful. lovely to listen to, and produce a very nice sound.   For the serious collector though, these are simply toys.
Cylinder music boxes come with different amounts of notes.  The higher the amount of notes that a box like this has, the better it sounds and the more expensive it is.  If you have never heard one of these boxes, then you should, even if only in a recording, as they are well worth it.
There are very few companies who still manufacture this type of box.  Reuge of Switzerland is the best known.  You can also find them on ebay, and most of the ones listed there are antiques.
Cylinder musical boxes sound the best when they are in a wood cabinet.  Sometimes you will see them housed in glass or crystal, and while this is beautiful to look at, it will not give you the depth of sound that a wood cabinet will.
Disc music boxes are more widely in production today.  Mr Christmas makes a few nice versions of disc music boxes, and there are many antique versions that can still be found.  Think of a disc music box as a forerunner to the record player.
They have interchangeable discs that play a variety of tunes, and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of these, you will find that every time you have people over they will want to gather around your music box.
If you decide on a disc or cylinder music box, then you will be sure to be delighted!
